Only Mary, the youngest, had a long life devoid of spectacular crashes or disappointments. ![]() ![]() Diana died of suicide before her parents in 1963 Sarah died of cirrhosis. Sarah was, by postwar years, clearly an alcoholic and was once rather messily arrested in Santa Monica. Clementine and she had difficulty understanding and connecting to one another. But she in turn was a difficult mother, especially to her eldest daughter Diana. Winston Churchill himself was often a trial to Clementine, who often needed extensive breaks to recover from the stress of living with him. The Trethewey style is light and readable, and she provides new perspectives on the family life that was the background to Churchill’s inimitable career and achievements. Instead it is a serious work based on the copious archived deposits in the Churchill Archives Centre at Churchill College, Cambridge. Rachel Trethewey’s study of the three Churchill daughters could easily have been a potboiler, rehashing old newspaper gossip columns. Can there be yet more to say about his family? The three Churchill daughters are represented by two volumes of reminiscences by Sarah, and Mary Churchills’ own charming memoirs. His wife Clementine is the subject of four biographies, the best of which is by her daughter Mary. Even his cook and his bodyguards have found coverage. His illnesses, finances, writing career-all have been the subject of interesting recent books. It can at times seem as if every conceivable facet of Churchill’s career has been explored. The rest of the collection is made up of Lady Spencer-Churchill's personal letters and papers, her diaries and albums of photographs and other mementos and also albums of official war photographs and of photographs taken when Sir Winston and Lady Churchill were engaged in public duties or official visits. This collection was used by Lady Soames in the writing of her mother's biography and it provides a splendid, detailed and often very moving record of a remarkable partnership. It contains the letters exchanged between Sir Winston (WSC) and Lady Churchill (CSC) from 1908, the time of their engagement, until 1963, shortly before Sir Winston's death (1965). The collection includes: papers and correspondence, photographs and press cuttings plus material on household and domestic administration. ![]()
